Bossy Child

Bossy Child

We’ve all seen it. The temperamental three-year-old whose seemingly unprovoked tantrums leave his desperate parents scrambling to appease him; the bossy child who never learns to share toys or interact socially with other children or strangers. How do you prevent your child from becoming one of them? Discipline of course!

Children need to be disciplined early in their lives. This is because they are more impressionable during their early years and they can retain lessons learned early on. But before you start disciplining your child, there are a few thing that you must do:

1) Set some rules and make sure your child understands them

To be fair to your child, you should set some ground rules that you expect him to follow. It’s ridiculous to discipline someone for breaking a rule, if they did not know it was a rule to begin with. Your children should also be clear of the penalties for breaking the rules.

2) Do not enforce too many rules in one shot.

Otherwise, your house will be a constant war zone. Sit down and make a list of the four or five areas that are most important to you and your partner. Are table manners extremely important to you or is putting away toys a priority? Enforce the most important rules first, and close one eye with regards to the rest.

3) Be consistent with your rules

If you insist that the set of rules be followed each day, your child will learn discipline, even though it may not seem that way at the time. Remember that if a four-year old complies with your rule, but talks back, that is still compliance. It’s okay if he has the last word, as long as he’s following the rule.

4) Keep your temper in check

Some parents may feel so angry that they tend to overdo disciplining. If you can not exclude your temper from the disciplinary action, you might end up hurting your child and the bond between the two of you. The last thing you want is to harour resentment in your child. Ask your partner for help when you feel out of control or overly emotional.

Disciplining strategies

Once you’ve set the rules, it’s time to figure out your discipline strategy. You can try out many disciplinary strategies for your four year old but these have shown best results. Also keep in mind that not all four year olds are the same, so different strategies might work for different children.

1) Talking to him (Verbal Reprimand)

One way to effectively discipline your child is to make him understand why you are upset with him. Making him understand the importance of behaving accordingly can be beneficial for both you and your child. Think of an angle that suits the way a four year old thinks. They do not usually understand complicated reasoning so it is best to keep it simple and basic. Giving an example will help but still keep it simple for better comprehension. If the child understands why he has to behave accordingly or why he is being reprimanded, there is a bigger possibility that he will keep this the lesson in mind.

2) Reward and punishment system

Reward your child if he behaves well and punish him when he misbehaves. The best rewards are praises, cuddles and admiration and the best punishments are to take away some of his privileges. Don’t bother shouting, it’ll only serve to either frighten your child or cause you a sore-throat.

3) Time out

A time out disciplinary system can be effective if your child listens to you or obeys the time out rules. Some children stay in the corner or obey when they are told to do so while others go back to mischief as soon as you turn your back to them. Children who tend to be really disobedient even when they are told to have a time out are more difficult to discipline and will need a different kind of disciplinary action.

4) Modified Grounding

Many parents use grounding as a discipline technique with their older children. However, when parents ground their children for long periods, it often loses its effectiveness because there is typically little incentive for children to behave well during the grounding. Modified grounding involves brief and intense grounding but the child is allowed the opportunity to earn his or her way off grounding by completing a job assignment.

Side Bar – Spanking

Yes, we know parenting kids can be tough. There are days you just want to fling your little emperor out of a window or smack them hard on their bum. But seriously spanking them is not going to do your child any good. It might shut your child up for or get him to behave himself for a short while, but it might also psychologically scar your child for life. Remember that hitting children teaches them to become hitters themselves.

Virtually all of the most dangerous criminals were regularly threatened and punished in childhood. So if you’ve been spanking your child, stop and ask yourself whether you REALLY think that spanking is going to teach your child any thing. Try one of the above strategies instead, if they don’t work, speak to a licensed child care professional about other positive techniques.

Heritage building in Kuala Terengganu to be demolished

Sorry for my ignorance, I just find out the news today after reading my husband grand niece blog. It was very sad for us because it involve my husband legacy. His grandfather open the bookstore when he came from China and settle down in Kuala Terengganu hundred years ago. The bookstore was known as Kedai Buku Pok Loh Yunang and I bet most of you from Terengganu will know about this bookstore since it has been there for ages. But now it is known as Alam Akademi. Government claims that the town getting congested and that’s it why they made decision to demolished the heritage building. I make me think as if when our parent get old and being difficult, we need to throw them away instead caring for them more. What do you think my friends? Anyway, below is an article from my husband grand niece and she’s only 14 years old. She write like an adult! If you can read the article (may be missing some pictures), please click at the link so you can read from the original source.

Say “NO” to the plan to demolish a heritage row in Kuala Terengganu

19/08/2009 by Aiman Amani Karim

Pak_Loh_in his bookshopOver a hundred years ago, my great, great grandfather, Abdullah Al-Yunani came to Kuala Terengganu from China and decided to stay there. He opened a bookstore named Abdullah Al-Yunani or better known to the locals as ‘Keda Buku Pok Loh Yunang’. Ask a person who was brought up in Kuala Terengganu, most of them would know the bookstore and they might even tell you that the shop was where they bought their schoolbooks long, long time ago. [Read what Awang Goneng wrote about it here]

Over a century, the business grew from a simple bookstore selling newspapers, a few kitabs (religious books) and some other books to a fully air-conditioned modern bookstore offering WiFi service. In the 1970s the bookstore was renamed Kedai Buku Ahmad Omar and later to Alam Akademik Sdn Bhd.

AA-tingkat bawah pelanggan-sMy grandfather, Ahmad Omar bought the shophouse more than 30 years ago but was forced to surrender the  land to the state government for only RM200, 000 (because of land acquisition)! Did we agree to such a low price for the freehold prime land right by the very main street of the town? Of course we did not; in fact my grandfather had never ever wanted to sell the shophouse for what ever price for the shophouse means so much to him. But what choice did he has when it came to land acquisition by the state government?

My grandparents complained the matter to the Terengganu Chief Minister (at the time), Tan Sri Wan Mokhtar Ahmad and he promised that the shophouses’ owners will be offered to buy new shophouses at a very special price (as part of the deal) to compensate our lost, as the RM200,000 paid to us was far below the market price at the time. He also promised us that the government will let us stay in the building until they provide us a new place in the area. Trusting that Tan Sri Wan Mokhtar’s words as official promises by the Terengganu state government, my grandfather did not make any further official complain. Furthermore as a strong UMNO supporter, my grandfather trusted the Barisan Nasional state government fully and never ever imagine that UMNO will disown their promises even though it was not made on paper!

AhmadOmar-SetPolMBMy grandfather used to work overseas for the first Malaysian Prime Minister YM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj as a diplomat with minister’s status and later joined the politics as a state assemblyman and also as the political secretary to the (then) Chief Minister, Tan Sri Ibrahim Fikri. And for the sake of UMNO my grandfather had no choice but to accept the offer without making a legal complain.

On the 19th July, 2009, 34 shopkeepers in Jalan Bandar and Jalan Banggol, Kuala Terengganu (including Alam Akademik) received a notice from the Lembaga Tabung Amanah Warisan Negari Terengganu to vacate the shophouses before 13th August, 2009. [Read about it in my previous posting here] When we questioned the notice and the promises made by the state government years ago at the time we were forced to surrender our land to the state government for a mere RM200,000; they said that they are not responsible of providing us a place to move to and have the right to force us out since the land is now theirs. What happened to all of the sweet promises they made before?

going next and goneThe sad news was that the LTAWNT or the ’supposedly’  heritage board of the state of Terengganu  is planning to demolish the heritage row to widen the road and to build new building in the name of modernisation. Isn’t it odd that the heritage board do not seems to understand the value of heritage? When the other states of Malaysia such as Melaka, Pulau Pinang (Penang) and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur are proud to restore their heritage buildings, the Terengganu heritage board looked at the heritage building as an eye sore. How sad…..Who can we trust to protect our heritage then? The heritage row is still standing strong and beautiful; and still fit for business. And what about the historical value of the building?

As Uncle Awang Goneng wrote in his blog ‘Kecek Kecek‘, ‘Now they are planning to pull down a row of shophouses in Kedai Payang, buildings that are more than a hundred years old that are still fit for purpose and need, at most, a tender loving touch and a coat of colour. Thus our history can be saved.’

stadium-bernama4The Terengganu state government had already destroyed lots of heritage  historical buildings to make way for new buildings. They claimed that they are building a modern ‘city’ and they do not want ‘old and shabby’ buildings in the city of Terengganu. If they are trying to say that the shophouses looked old and shabby, think again. It does NOT look shabby at all, in fact its quality is even better than the new ‘modern’ buildings which are facing problems (including those that collapsed) as we can see day after day. The state government should instead use the fund to restore and beautify the heritage row and protect the heritage historical building for its invaluable historical value to the people of Terengganu.

The reason why the government cannot see all these is because they are all money-driven. They are greedy and materialistic, all they think of is money, money, money. [see various comments on Kecek-kecek's Mabuk Kepayang]  And not even one assemblyman nor their representatives (except one from the opposition party) came to visit us. It was reported in the newspaper that the Chief Minister Y.A.B. Dato’ Ahmad bin Said visited some villages and helped them to fix roofs and did all kinds of other things. But why can’t he meet us even once? asked CikguFauzi of MAMPAT (view here on Youtube as reported by http://buletinonline.net/ or as reported by NTV7)

HM bantah notis“He is a coward” said one of the shopowners during the many protests held. “Is he afraid of what people may think of him? He knew it was wrong of him to do what he is doing but who cares? He’ll get the money and it’s not him who will suffer… it’s us“. To all those out there who care enough for the heritage and history, please help us to preserve the place. You could ask help from organisations, NGOs or perhaps inform this to a person you know. The least you can do is perhaps to write about it and spread the message. You’ll never know how powerful words can be.

Do Not Take Vitamin C with Prawn/Shrimp

I received this fact from a friend. Honestly I don’t really know if it’s true or not but for health purposes I’m posting it in my blog. Those Chinese writing not from me, LOL! It come with the email - Hazel

Taiwan, a woman suddenly died unexpectedly with signs of bleeding from her ears, nose, mouth & eyes. After a preliminary autopsy it was diagnosed death due to arsenic poisoning death. Where did the arsenic come from?
The police launched an in-depth and extensive investigation. A medical school professor was invited to come to solve the case.
The professor carefully looked at the contents from the deceased's stomach, in less than half an hour, the mystery was solved. The professor said: 'The deceased did not commit suicide and neither was she murdered, she died of accidental death due to ignorance!'
Everyone was puzzled, why accidental death? The arsenic is of the U.S. military for carrying rice seedlings H Gao. The professor said: 'The arsenic is produced in the stomach of the deceased.' The deceased used to take 'Vitamin C' everyday, which in itself is not a problem. The problem was that she ate a large portion of shrimp/prawn during dinner. Eating shrimp/prawn is not the problem that's why nothing happened to her family ever though they took the same shrimp/prawn. However at the same time the deceased also took 'vitamin C', that is where the problem is!
Researchers at the University of Chicago in the United States, found through experiments, food such as soft-shell shrimp/prawn contains a much higher concentration of - five potassium arsenic compounds.
Such fresh food by itself has no toxic effects on the human body! However, in taking 'vitamin C', due to the chemical reaction, the original non-toxic - five potassium arsenic (As anhydride, also known as arsenic oxide, the chemical formula for As205) changed to a three potassium toxic arsenic (ADB arsenic anhydride), also known as arsenic trioxide, a chemical formula (As203), which is commonly known as arsenic to the public!
Arsenic poisoning have magma role and can cause paralysis to the small blood vessels, "mercapto Jimei"??, inhibits the activity of the liver and fat necrosis change Hepatic Lobules Centre, heart, liver, kidney, intestine congestion, epithelial cell necrosis, telangiectasia. Therefore, a person who dies of arsenic poisoning will shows signs of bleeding from the ears, nose, mouth & eyes.
Therefore; as a precautionary measure, DO NOT not take shrimp/prawn when taking 'vitamin C'.
After reading this; please do not be stingy. Forward to your friends and family!!

This is something we should all read at least once a week
Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me... It is the most-requested column I've ever written. My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone...
4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first pay check.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words “In five years, will this matter?'
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.
35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
42. The best is yet to come.
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.
Its estimated 93% won't forward this. If you are one of the 7% who will, forward this with the title '7%'. I'm in the 7%.
Remember that I will always share my spoon with you! Friends are the family that we choose for ourselves

Shake The Disease - Depeche Mode

I'm not going down on my knees begging you to adore me
Can't you see it's misery and torture for me
When I misunderstood try as hard as you can
I've tried as hard as I could
To make you see how important it is for me

Here is a plea from my heart to you
Nobody knows me as well as you do
You know how hard it is for me to shake the disease
That takes hold of my tongue in situations like these

Understand me
Understand me
Understand me
Understand me

Some people have to be permanently together
Lovers devoted to each other forever
Now I've got things to do and I've said before
That I know you have too when I'm not there
In spirit I'll be there

Here is a plea from my heart to you
Nobody knows me as well as you do
You know how hard it is for me to shake the disease
That takes hold of my tongue in situations like these

Understand me
